SCC Story
SCC was formed in the Digby Tap pub by a group of friends who enjoyed cycling and socialising in January 2016. The original members enjoyed sportive, charity rides and triathlons, so starting regular rides from Sherborne seemed an excellent plan. To help establish the club, members with local businesses sponsored the club to cover costs of clothing artwork setup and British Cycling affiliation.
The original committee felt affiliation to a national organisation was important because informal groups had previously come and gone. The club quickly evolved and regular rides attracted increasing numbers of riders. Members also did bigger rides such as Lands End to John O'Groats, Ride across America, Ride London and multi day charity rides.
The committee recognised the significant benefits cycling and socialising have on mental health and wellbeing and this has been an important part of the club purpose and is why we are not all about performance, though there is some healthy competition for fun and some very capable riders. The founders share quiet delight seeing the post ride buzz which shows folks have unwound from their daily stress and the club is achieving part of its original mission.
The connection with Sherborne is important to many riders and was maintained in a new jersey design and sponsors again helped with the setup costs. The club's social side has been a strong factor in its success and again the sponsors have helped with this, supporting the summer barbeque, end of season chilli night and awards at the prize giving night. The committee has changed over the years and the membership has grown but the ethos has been constant.
